For this lesson, you will create a laptop skin for a 13” Macbook Pro or Macbook Air.

Step 1: Inspiration
Begin by searching the internet to find examples of laptop skins that you find interesting. Print out at least three different designs and glue them in your sketchbook.
Step 2: Introducing the project
For this project you will create a laptop skin that expresses something about you. Here are the parameters for this project:

Step 3: Sketching
Now it’s time to be creative! Complete 3 detailed colored thumbnail sketches of your laptop skin ideas in your sketchbooks. SIZE: 3”w x 2” h. Each sketch should incorporate the apple logo into your design. Questions to consider:
The Pen Tool: As a class we will go over how to create and edit paths using the Pen tool and selection arrows. After, I will distribute a file via Air Drop where you can practice the tool further.
Print out your results and glue them in your sketchbook.
Live Trace: We will look at the Live Trace tool together as a class. Next, create a random black and white design in your sketchbook. We will use a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator techniques to convert your drawing into a path.

Step 4: Executing Your Ideas
Now that you have the hang of Illustrator, it’s time for you to start executing your ideas.

- •Learn about the different tools in Illustrator and their function
- •Learn how to set tool preferences in order to achieve a desired effect
- •Learn how to create vector images in Illustrator by using the Pen, Shape and Selection tools
- •Learn how to create a piece of design within certain project parameters
PROCEDURE:

For this project you will create a laptop skin that expresses something about you. Here are the parameters for this project:
Requirements:
- •File size: Use the A4 template that will be given to you in class. You may choose to use the entire sticker, or cut pieces out of it. If you choose to cut pieces out, there should be little waste.
- •Color: Minimum of two colors. No maximum amount.
- •Concept: You laptop skin should incorporate the apple into its design. Your design should express something about you and your interests/passions.
- •Dominance: Designs should be either image or type dominant.
- •The entire project must be a vector graphic. No bitmapped images are allowed.
Step 3: Sketching

- •Will you work with a limited or full color palette?
- •Will your piece be type or image dominant?
- •Will your piece have patterns or visual motifs?
- •How will you incorporate the apple on the lid?
- •What type of mood do you want your laptop to communicate?
- •How does this skin represent your interests/passions?
